Telefonica LTE, Rolling Out HSPA+ In Mid Year

Telefonica has conducted its first live network tests of LTE technology at its demonstration centre in Madrid. The demonstration included VoIP calls and video downloads and playback on a mini network installed by Ericsson. The network achieved speeds of 140 Mbps. Before rolling out LTE, Telefonica plans to introduce HSPA+ on its 3G network, from mid-2009. By the end of this year, the first commercial services at up to 21 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload will be available. The HSPA+ service will initially be available with a mobile data card.

Telefonica’s HSDPA network currently covers 81 percent of the population and is expected to reach over 85 percent by year-end. HSUPA is expected to hit 50 percent coverage by year-end.
