Microsoft is reportedly readying smartphone-compatible Zune software in an apparent effort to boost its portable media player brand and encourage greater uptake of its Windows Mobile operating system.

The software upgrade is reportedly close to completion with Microsoft searching for ad firms to work on a project, called ‘Pink’. An InformationWeek report claims this is the codename for Microsoft’s efforts open Zune’s multimedia software up to other devices.

The supposed launch follows rumours earlier this year that Microsoft is working on a ‘Zune phone’ device. It also comes weeks after Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said the software giant was going to “keep going with Zune” and “sustain our investment”.

Earlier this week, leaked images indicated the imminent release of a third-generation Zune media player, modelled on Apple’s iPod Touch. Dubbed the ZuneHD, this will reportedly be the first Zune device to receive a full release outside the US.

Zune’s current computer-based desktop software links to an online store and also offers recommendations and social networking tools.
