Developers have discovered the upcoming iPhone 3.0 software has the potential to add voice control and voice feedback.

The company’s extended display targets the mobile workforce with a larger screen for easier viewing. The feature is code-named “Jibbler,” and it will be built into the Springboard application which is the iPhone’s home screen and application launcher, according to a report by Ars Technica. This means Apple’s smartphone could get voice dialing capabilities, which has been much-coveted by iPhone users because voice dialing has been a standard feature on Research In Motion BlackBerry, and Nokia high-end smartphones.
This software is also reportedly able to use a computerized voice to speak to the user. This is currently used in Apple’s latest iPod Shuffle to speak artists, songs, and playlists, but the iPhone version could potentially be used for things like turn-by-turn navigation, or electronic-book reading. Apple has not confirmed this software is in the upcoming iPhone 3.0 software, but the company has a tendency to bring software advancements across its portfolio of devices. For example, the iPhone 3.0 software will enable users to shake their device to play a random song, and this feature originated in the latest iPod Nano.

Developers said these voice features are only accessible by Apple, which means third-party developers cannot use it to create apps. It is unknown if these voice features will be turned on when the 3.0 software is distributed this summer, or if Apple will wait to activate it. It is possible that Apple will announce these voice features this summer when it is widely expected to introduce new iPhone hardware.
