After weeks of anticipation, Google (GOOG) is about to finally roll out an updated version of the Android operating system. T-Mobile, which sells the G1 smartphone, will allow customers to download the new OS, dubbed “cupcake” while in development but now known simply as Android 1.5, by the end of next week. T-Mobile’s smartphones are about to get a lot smarter.

Once the new OS is out, G1 phone users will be able to play with a variety of new tools and toys. As CNet has reported, Google’s new function Live Folders allows you to look over every film, e-book, e-mail, or song in your phone, without having to open each application and scroll through it. A “virtual keyboard” will appear on the screen, allowing users to dispense with the physical keyboard if they want; users can even program to phone to click and vibrate as you type, giving a tactile sense of what you’re doing. But the coolest features have got to be the capacity to instantly post film and photographs you shoot with your phone onto YouTube and Picassa. Imagine walking down the street, whipping out your phone and shooting something on the spot; with just a few clicks as you keep walking, everyone online will suddenly be able to see what you’ve just filmed.

As PC World reporter Daniel Ionescu points out, many of these features will also be available on the iPhone and WebOS in the next few months, but Google got them out first. In addition, Google was able to update the operating system without forcing customers to buy new phone hardware to accommodate it, which is always nice.
