3G Coverage Reaches Mount Everest!!!

A Nepalese mobile phone company has launched 3G service in the Mount Everest region, the highest point in the world, the company said Thursday.

The company, Telia Sonera which operates the N-cell mobile service, told journalists in Kathmandu that they had set up a 5,200 metre high station for 3G service in the Everest Base Camp in the Khumbu region.

“We also aim at reaching out to 90 percent of the Nepalese population by the end of 2011,” said the company’s president, Lars Nyberg.

The service should make it possible for climbers to communicate with the base camp on Everest and the rest of the world.

The only means of communication so far for mountaineers has been satellite phones.
